It is a well-known fact that umbrella companies in the UK are not regulated by the government. This has led to a rise in dubious and fraudulent tax avoidance schemes.
To raise awareness and to protect the interests of temporary workers, HMRC has prepared a list of umbrella companies that they have found to be involved in running tax avoidance schemes. The list is not complete by any means but it is updated on a regular basis, in other words, once the HMRC catches an umbrella company that is involved in running tax avoidance schemes, they update the list to make everyone aware.
HMRC list is helpful but it certainly does not solve the main issue at hand. The UK’s temporary workforce needs government-regulated umbrella companies. Private accreditations from the likes of FCSA and Professional Passport have helped to a certain extent, but more recently we have found that some of these accredited umbrella companies have been involved in questionable business practices.
HMRC is actively investigating umbrella companies that are running tax avoidance schemes. This investigation will aid in safeguarding the interests of temporary workforce. Umbrella companies involved in tax avoidance are the worst umbrella companies.
Below is HMRC’s list of umbrella companies involved in tax avoidance schemes. This list will be updated on a regular basis. HMRC's most recent update was on 11 January 2024 with with the removal of 3 schemes in line with requirements of the Finance Act 2021.
